Entre 1764 et 1767, une affaire provoqua une véritable psychose dans la région du Gévaudan et du Vivarais
(Ardèche/Cantal/Haute-Loire/Lozère). Cet animal que l’on nommera très vite « La Bête du Gévaudan » fera couler
beaucoup d’encre et de sang avec pas moins de 130 morts et 70 blessés. Le Roi enverra ses meilleurs dragons et
spécialistes sur le territoire afin de mettre fin à ces sanglantes années.
Sujet a de nombreuses rumeurs sur
l'origine animale ou humaine ainsi que le mystère planant sur cette légende/réalité, on découvre très rapidement que
l’histoire fascine toujours autant historiens et anonymes. Que reste-t-il de cette histoire? Comment a-t-elle imprégné
le territoire et l’inconscient collectif? Comment la région entretient-elle le mythe?

An animal which will soon be called “La Bête du Gévaudan” or «The Beast of Gevaudan" will devoted a lot of ink and blood with not
less than 130 people dead and 70 wounded, and will captivated the public opinion and fascinated the press at that time. The King had to
send his best Dragon Guards and specialists to the region in order to put an end to this mysterious killing streak.
Until this day, there is a lot of enigma hovering on this story. There is much speculation regarding its authenticity and the origins
of the Beast. Nevertheless, “La Bête du Gévaudan” remains an intriguing subject for historians and the public opinion. One might
wonder: What is left untold of the story? How has it permeated the region and the collective unconsciousness? How does the region
view it?
This project, la Bestia, is a photographic and historic work take form as a investigation in these almost unchanged landscapes
where the Beast sowed terror.
